Thankfully, we have not had a heavy snowfall yet this winter. However, if and when we do, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has a new web tool that shows the status of plowing in northern Virginia neighborhoods. Once it snows at least two inches, residents can find out the status of plowing their area by typing in their address at http://novasnowplowing.virginia.gov
U.S. 1 Widening: Back to the Future
Bill Alvey was just 8 years old when he began working at his father's auto repair shop on his family's property along U.S. 1 in Woodbridge.
The Dumfries resident would pick up trash, pump gas and help the mechanics at J & J Garage. By age 13, he was even towing wrecked cars off the highway.
Business was good and the area began to blossom as Marumsco Plaza and other shops opened. The Alveys expanded their investment in the area, buying about 13 acres of land along the growing corridor and constructing more buildings. (Read article)
Every month, a group of Northern Virginia’s top business executives meets for cocktails, dinner and private conversation at — where else? — the Tower Club in Tysons Corner.
A lot has changed in the decades since George Johnson, then the president of the small, struggling George Mason University, first convened the 123 Club, in large part because of the efforts of the men gathered around Johnson’s dining room table. (Read article)

Updated Information on the Blackburn Road Bridge
Staff has completed the damage assessment and developed an action plan to address the damage of the Blackburn Road bridge over Cow Branch.
There is instability on both bridge abutments, this is the result of undermining from bridge scour that has appeared since our previous bridge inspection on 1/7/2010. Severe weather events that occurred in August 2011 (Hurricane Irene) and September 2011 (Tropical Storm Lee) are the most likely cause of the scour that caused Abutment B to fracture into two halves.
The bridge needs to be replaced, VDOT will accomplish this by emergency contract. The estimated cost to replace the bridge in kind is around $ 1 million dollars. We have started working on the emergency contract, there are a couple of unknown s such as affected utilities and available right of way for construction activities, though our goal is to have the contract in place within the next few weeks and have construction completed prior to the start of the next school year. Due to the existing bridge condition, it will have to remain closed until the new bridge is in place. Traffic will continue to be detoured following the established detour.
Monthly progress reports will provided . Thank you for your support and understanding. Please contact me or Nick Roper, VDOT District Bridge Engineer at 703-259-1953 should you have any questions about this.
Torian Eyes Metro, "Improvement Fees"
Richmond, Va. – Since he was elected to the Virginia House, Delegate Luke Torian (D-Dumfries, Woodbridge) has been pushing to bring Metrorail service to Prince William County.
During the 2010 legislative session, he sponsored House Bill 1313, which would have created the Prince William County Metrorail Improvement District “to provide a means of financing an extension of commuter rail service from Fairfax County into Prince William County.” That bill died in the House Appropriations Committee.
